"Mind Needs Books And The Sword Needs Whetstone"

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite overwhelming obstacles.” Christopher Reeve.

The story I will share today has nothing to do with the above-mentioned quote but I love it and thought I would share it here.

When my sisters tell and ask me to go abroad for better opportunities and a better future. I always advise them to rethink their thoughts twice. The reason why I do that is because I believe one of the most important things in life is to make our realities a strength.

These days and ages I am reading the series of Game of Thrones and besides Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, and Bran Stark, one of my favorite characters in it is Tyrion Lannister a pimp, pigmy or the dwarf.

One day Jon comes and asks Tyrion Lannister why he always reads.

Tyrion Lannister smiles and says “How old are you?”

“Fourteen.”

“Fourteen and taller than I could ever be.” Tyrion Lannister said. “My sister is a queen and the whole power is in my brother-in-law’s hand. Where there is power; there is supposed to be wisdom to guide the power as the wise men say ‘The mind needs books as the sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge.’ When my sister and brother-in-law are the power I the dwarf have to be the wise man to sharpen the power since I will never be able to be on a battlefield.”

When I read this part of the conversation I tried to reflect on myself when I was a young novice monk in Sri Lanka. When my age of novices started getting taller and bigger I thought I was going to read and learn far better than them which will help me to be better at knowledge and skills.

I was sad and depressed for my height at first but I tried to accept the way I am.

I stopped being sad and tried to read as many books as I could because I wanted to be a good storyteller novice monk and attract the devotees. I believe I succeeded. Seven years later when I decided to go back to my home country Nepal I remember I had more than five thousand pens from my students; that means over five thousand kids loved me the way I used to tell stories to them.

That is the one reason I love the character of Tyrion Lannister. He is a dwarf but a wise man. He is physically not that powerful but mentally he builds the power and guides to destroy alternate power.

That’s why someone the businessman said “learn the skills and build the brand.”
