Chapter 1

Babes… wake up.”

“Mmm…”

“Come on, we’re late! Get up already.”

Dan was covering his face with the blanket and heard someone whispering outside.

What the hell? Who’s talking to me so lovingly? Who’s waking me up so nicely? My mother never does that. I must be dreaming. Hell yes—it’s a dream, he thought.

Normally, Dan would hear his mother shouting, but today was different. The voice was soft, sweet like honey, and utterly lovely.

“Babes, you’re still sleeping. Wake up.”

I slowly opened my eyes to see who it was.

“Oh my goodness! Somebody help me! Mom, where are you?” He started shouting.

Someone was standing there, dressed in black and wearing a devil mask. I tried to get up and run, but my legs were tangled in the bedsheet, and I stumbled to the floor.

“Oh my God! Are you alright?” The devil ran toward him and knelt on the floor.

“Don’t come closer!” Dan shouted. “Step back—I know karate, and I’ll beat you up!”

“All right! All right!” the figure said, raising his hands. “I’m Jay.” He removed the mask and started laughing.

Jay was his best friend. They had met in Bangkok and had been inseparable ever since, sharing both the good and the bad times in life.

“You little dog!” Dan shouted. “What the hell are you doing in a little kid’s room, scaring them half to death?”

“Bro, you really got scared!” Jay laughed.

“And that’s funny to you, right?” Dan muttered, sitting on the bed. “After all the crappy pranks you’ve done!”

“Sorry, bro. Don’t be mad, man. I was just having a little fun.”

“Get off,” I said, falsely angry.

“Okay, okay,” Jay said with a smile. “Come on—get ready now. We’ve got to go to school.”

“Hmm…” Dan muttered as he walked to the bathroom. “Go get a shower.”

Jay kept laughing and picked up his phone to check Facebook. Mimi and Pim had posted a selfie with the hashtag #attheschool. Both were in their friend group and were known as the sweetest, most innocent girls in the class.

He liked the picture and smiled.

“Innocent.”
